From 16 – 22 November, join Cancer Council Australia and the Australasian College of Dermatologists for National Skin Cancer Action Week. This national campaign aims to raise awareness about the importance of daily sun protection and the risks of incidental sun exposure.
Why It Matters
Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. Approximately two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime, and over 2,000 Australians die from skin cancer each year. The majority of skin cancers are caused by overexposure to UV radiation, which can occur even during everyday activities like walking to work or waiting for a bus.
How You Can Help
During National Skin Cancer Action Week, Cancer Council encourages all Australians to make sun protection a daily habit. Whether you’re spending time outdoors or going about your daily routine, remember to:
- Slip on sun protective clothing that covers as much skin as possible.
- Slop on SPF50 or higher, broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen.
- Slap on a broad-brimmed hat to protect your face, head, neck, and ears.
- Seek shade whenever possible.
- Slide on sunglasses that meet Australian standards.
These simple steps can significantly reduce your risk of developing skin cancer.
Stay Informed
Keep track of UV levels in your area by downloading the free SunSmart app or visiting the Bureau of Meteorology website. Remember, UV levels can reach extreme levels across Australia, especially during the summer months.
By prioritising skin health, we not only safeguard our teams but also strengthen workplace wellbeing as a whole.
