International Women’s Day, celebrated on 8 March, is a worldwide moment to celebrate women’s social, economic, cultural and political achievements and to call for faster progress toward gender equality.
In 2026, IWD marks an extraordinary milestone: 115 years of collective action, advocacy, and progress toward gender equality. This year’s theme for 2026 is ‘Give to Gain’, which encourages everyone to invest time, energy and resources into supporting women and girls, knowing that these actions create positive ripple effects for communities and societies as a whole.
The day honours the women who inspire us, challenge inequality and remind us that everyone can play a part in creating a fairer, more inclusive world. International Women’s Day isn’t just about grand gestures. It’s about noticing the women around you, saying thank you and choosing to act with kindness and respect every day.
You can find more about the theme, campaigns and events on the official International Women’s Day website.
Ways to celebrate:
- Give a thoughtful gift: Surprise a woman in your life with a small, meaningful gift that reflects her interests: a favourite book, a plant, or a journal. Pair it with a short message that highlights her impact on you.
- Send a handwritten note: A short letter or card telling someone why you admire them can mean more than a dozen social media posts. Thank a colleague, friend or family member for their strength, kindness or creativity.
- Support women-owned businesses: Treat yourself or a loved one to something from a woman-led shop, café or online store. A small act can have a big effect!
- Share a story: On social media, spotlight a woman who has influenced you and share what she’s taught you. Use hashtags like #IWD2026 to help her story reach more people.
- Plan a get-together Host a coffee catch-up, a walk in the park or a movie night with films that centre women’s stories. Make it a space where everyone feels seen and celebrated.
- Give time Offer to help in a practical way: babysit for a busy parent, volunteer with a women’s charity or simply listen without judgment when someone wants to talk.
