World Bee Day on 20 May is a chance to celebrate one of nature’s busiest and most important creatures… the bee 🐝
First recognised by the United Nations in 2017, the day raises awareness of the vital role bees and other pollinators play in keeping our ecosystems thriving and our plates full. Around 70 of the world’s top 100 human food crops rely on pollination, meaning bees are behind a huge portion of the food we enjoy every day.
The date also honours Anton Janša, a pioneer of modern beekeeping, whose innovative approach helped shape how we care for bees today.
Despite their importance, bee populations are declining due to climate change, habitat loss, pesticides and disease. This puts not just our food supply at risk, but entire ecosystems that depend on pollination.
The good news is that small, everyday actions can make a real difference. Plant bee friendly flowers, avoid pesticides, leave out fresh water, and support local beekeepers by choosing locally made honey.
