Earth Day is one of the most widely observed environmental events on the calendar, with people across the globe coming together every April 22 to take action for our planet.
This year’s theme is ‘Our Power, Our Planet’ – a reminder that individual choices and community efforts can drive real change when it comes to clean air, clean water, renewable energy, and a healthier climate.
A little history
Earth Day began in 1970 as a call for environmental awareness in the United States, and has since grown into a global movement. Today it inspires everything from local cleanups and tree planting events to campaigns for stronger climate policies. Schools, workplaces, and community groups around the world use the day to raise awareness about recycling, conservation, and protecting wildlife.
Make a difference at home
You don’t need a big gesture to join in. Small, everyday habits can add up to a real impact over time:
- Reduce single-use plastics and compost food scraps where you can
- Switch to energy-saving bulbs and turn off lights when you leave a room
- Try hanging laundry to dry instead of using a tumble dryer
- Choose meat-free meals more often, or start a small herb or vegetable garden
Bring it into the workplace
Earth Day is a great opportunity to get colleagues involved, too. Try a ‘green challenge’ for the day: go paper light, set up clearly marked recycling stations, or organise a local park or street cleanup as a team. A short lunchtime session on sustainability tips, or simply adding a few plants to shared spaces, can spark conversation and inspire longer-term habits.
